I love decorating cakes, but sometimes it can feel a little daunting. Thankfully, there’s a quick and easy way to jazz up a cake for any special occasion: chocolate letters. This is, by far, one of my favorite cake decorating ideas. The best part is that you don’t even need a piping bag (I just use a ziploc bag). So, let’s get started!
Measure 1/4 cup of chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate into a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds and then stir. Continue to microwave and stir until the chocolate melts and is smooth. If you overheat the chocolate (which I have done on a fairly regular basis), you can usually salvage it by stirring in just enough vegetable oil to create a glossy, smooth consistency.
Prepare the “piping bag” by cutting off the corner of a zip-top plastic bag. Cut off as small of a corner as you can, because you can always make it bigger later. Then spoon the chocolate into the ziploc bag. Twist the bag to help guide the chocolate to the cut corner of the ziploc bag. When I pipe these chocolate letters, I apply steady pressure from the top down. But if you have your own technique, go for it! 🙂You can pipe the chocolate letters and designs directly onto the cake, but I like to pipe the chocolate on parchment paper. That way, I can make as many mistakes as I want 🙂
If you decide to use parchment paper, place the parchment paper onto a cookie sheet before you pipe the chocolate designs. Then, refrigerate everything for at least 20 minutes. When the chocolate words are solid, you can carefully peel the parchment paper away from the chocolate. Now have fun decorating your cake!
*Note: If the chocolate words break as you transfer them to the cake, don’t worry! Just align the letters on the cake, and no one will know the difference.
Chocolate letters are a fun & easy cake decorating idea for the Spring Cake with Strawberry Mousse Filling and Whipped Cream Cheese Frosting. The contrast between the white frosting and dark chocolate is quite lovely. These edible chocolate decorations are perfect for cupcake decoration and any dessert presentation.
You can also use the chocolate letters and designs to decorate homemade specialty coffees. I jazzed up my morning latte with this chocolate swirl. I hope you have fun creating your own chocolate decorations!
