The first two sentences that GAIL’s Artisan Bakery uses to describe itself: “We’re an artisan bakery in London. We think bread is beautiful.”
This lovely eatery revolves around baked goods done right. Their deep love for crafting quality baked goods is blissfully apparent in every lip-smacking, carb-laden morsel. The wild concoctions of things that do not belong together, like garlic and ice cream, are pleasantly absent from the menu. GAIL’s doesn’t need to rely on over-the-top, of-the-moment stunts to draw a crowd. The classic, enduring qualities of their baked goods sing their siren song loud and clear. Even the storefront and interior are tastefully decorated with clean lines and unobtrusive colors that allow the true stars of the show, the small-batch artisan baked goods, to take center stage.
And I can attest that these baked goods are certainly worthy of the spotlight. The cinnamon bun, constructed from perfectly flakey croissant dough that twirls around a cinnamon sugar filling is absolute perfection. I wish this cinnamon-sugar dusted delight was a song so I could put it on replay. And while I am quite loyal to sweet treats, the Mixed Olive Sourdough I picked up did not disappoint. The thick, hearty crust encased a soft interior with flavorful olives and hints of thyme. When I closed my eyes, I could almost feel a warm sea-breeze off the Mediterranean. Every item in the bakery is inventive, without losing the quality of tradition, and hearty, without being heavy.
My excitement over this wonderland of baked marvels was pretty obvious. And while most people at most cafes give me a look that says, “Okay lady, calm down,” the gentleman running the counter at GAIL’s completely matched my enthusiasm. When I asked about his favorite treats, he pointed them out one-by-one and described them with the same enthusiasm and attention to detail that an ardent member of the Audubon Society would use to describe a Dartford Warbler.
And that’s why I love GAIL’s Artisan Bakery. From its breads and décor to its people, everything about this place reflects the belief that bread is beautiful. And at GAIL’s, it certainly is.
